Waterloo radio station celebrates 75 years on air

Posted: Updated:

An eastern Iowa radio station is celebrating 75 years on the air.

KXEL went on the air on July 15th, 1942.

It was a 50,000 watt radio station that could be heard across Iowa by day and across half the country by night.

KXEL's news and programming director Jeff Stein says it's important we remember the station's history.

"Anniversaries like this are important because they remind us of where we've come from, where we have come, and where we are going," he says.

Back in the 1940s and 50s, KXEL and KWWL were big radio station rivals.

They both tried to get licensing to become the first Waterloo TV station.

In the end, KWWL got the license.

Today, KXEL is having a special celebration in honor of decades on air.
