Famous cyclist Lance Armstrong to join RAGBRAI route Thursday

CRESCO (KWWL) -

A world-famous American cyclist will return to Iowa tomorrow for another RAGBRAI ride.

Lance Armstrong will meet up with riders trekking across Iowa tomorrow, and is expected in Cresco -- which is Day 5's overnight town -- later that night. The official RAGBRAI site announced the appearance Wednesday. NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson is also expected in Cresco. Tomorrow's route will also cross through Ionia, New Hampton, Lawler and Protivin after starting for the day in Charles City.

Armstrong, who once called RAGBRAI "Woodstock on bikes," became renowned for his seven consecutive Tour de France yellow jersey victories. That run ended in 2005, but all of his titles were stripped in 2012 as a result of doping allegations. He's ridden the RAGBRAI route in previous years, and helped to raise money for eastern Iowa foundations through a benefit concert in Cedar Falls during the ride in 2008.
