McGregor cleans up after EF-1 tornado, businesses reopen

Posted: Updated:

An EF-1 tornado tore through the town of McGregor last Wednesday evening.

Many downtown buildings suffered extensive damage, including older, historic buildings. Officials say it will be some time before things are back to normal.

Days after, many are hard at work cleaning up the devastation.

This includes demolishing a building built in 1865. "Unfortunately historic buildings of that nature can't be replaced," said Fred Petrie. "You can't rebuild an 1860s building."

The tornado had 110 mile per hour winds, which made the building unstable, where the tattoo shop, INKspiration was located.

The buildings owner says they could not save it. "It had to be demolished because it was so close to the library, there were huge standing walls that weren't supported well, that could've tipped on to the library."

At the moment, it is not known how many other historic buildings in town will also have to be torn down, like the John Goedert building, which was built in the 1800s.

As for clean-up, Mayor Harold Brooks says recovery will be ongoing.  "I look for it to be constant for minimum two weeks, he said. "Every day it seems different. Clean up an area, go to another area and come back -- that area there's something to haul away again."

Mayor Brooks adds many of the shops on Main Street have reopened, and are ready for business.
