Flooding continues along Wapsipinicon River

Posted: Updated:

Flooding continues on some local rivers due to heavy rain that fell last week across northeast Iowa.

The Wapsipinicon River at Independence has crested and will continue to fall. It is expected to be below flood stage Tuesday morning. Downstream at Anamosa, the river will be on the cusp of major flooding when it reaches its crest Wednesday at 21.0 feet. It will fall below flood stage Friday evening.

According to the Jones County Emergency Management Coordinator Brenda Leonard, they are not doing any preparations right now because they expect to be lower than the 2016 flood and their buyouts they have done, and raising critical structure in the area, should work.

Leonard says at most, they are expecting some potential issues in Oxford Junction around Friday. They do not expect homes or businesses to be impacted by the flooding in Jones County, however, some roads may close.
