Schaake captures Waterloo Open amateur title

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

For the third time in four years, a Schaake captured the amateur title at the Waterloo Open. Alex Schaake followed in his older brother's footsteps, shooting 11 under par for a one stroke victory. Carson Schaake, a former Hawkeye golfer, had won the event two out of the past three years.

Alex Schaake, who was born in Waterloo, but moved to Omaha early in life, had the support of numerous and friends who still live in the metro area, and it didn't hurt that he was familiar with the Irv Warren course.

"We come back here four or five times a year to either play in the tournament, or for family holidays," said Schaake, "It's special for us with the course being four or five minutes from my grandfather's house where we stay. It's just awesome."

Schaake, a sophomore golfer at Iowa, birdied five of the final nine holes to secure the one stroke victory over Illinois State's Trey Tussey.
