High river levels causes flooding in Clayton County

Posted: Updated:

The Volga River spilled into the small community of Littleport in Clayton County.

What appeared to be a lake, is 322nd Street inundated with water. It was deep enough some kids in the neighborhood decided to go kayaking. But some homeowners are dealing with the headache of having water everywhere.

A few homes were flooded throughout. "Just waiting to see if it's gonna stay, if it's gonna crumble or if it's gonna float away," said Rita Zapf.

Zapf and her family hoped to keep the water out of their home. "It come up really, really fast. Usually, it's not as fast. We had sandbagged all the way around the house and we thought maybe that would keep it out."

Neighbors down the street, were not hit as hard.

"Those are the sandbags. We just set them in front of the garage door and that kept the water out, and over there too -- it wasn't too bad," said Quinton Knipper.

The Littleport Campground also flooded. It is located right along the Volga River, so the park is covered with water.

Also in Clayton County, high waters from the Turkey River caused some problems. In Elkport, some roads were blocked off because of flooding.
