Help available for flood victims in Sumner

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls is in Bremer County, helping the flooded community of Sumner. Bremer County Emergency Management requested The Emergency Disaster Services Canteen early this morning when the town of 3,000 residents lost power and water due to flash flooding overnight.

Staff and volunteers of The Salvation Army of Waterloo/Cedar Falls sent sandwiches, snacks and more than 1,500 bottles of water to aid flood victims and emergency service workers in the community. Additional resources are being brought in from Cedar Rapids EDS.

Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels in Waterloo is generously donating coffee and several hundred bagels for Sunday morning breakfast for Sumner residents.

The Waterloo EDS team serves as Northeast Iowa Command Center and coordinates disaster response. “Relief efforts are continuing full force,” says Major Harold Poff.  “When the waters recede, residents will have the task of cleaning up from the devastation.  The Salvation Army is also committed to the recovery process.”

The Bremer County Emergency Management Facebook page says:

"Heavy rains have inundated the community.  The Sumner Light Plant has been flooded and controls are under water and inoperable.  Emergency generated power is being brought in and will be connected at strategic locations around the community to restore circuits.  The ESTIMATED time for this is 16-24 hours."

An EMERGENCY SHELTER has been opened at the Chapel at the Hillcrest Home. Please use the Chapel entrance.

Many basements are flooded in the area.
