Heavy rains pummel Sumner

Posted: Updated:

Heavy rains have been hitting the town of Sumner since Friday morning, making it difficult for people to keep up with the flash flooding.

Non-stop rain has been leaving little relief for people in Sumner.

"It's all it's been doing today is rain," said Mary Brown. "We got like four inches this morning."

"Trees, poles down, and this morning we had the massive rain again," said Geri Salisbury.

The city park is shut down because of flooding. Barricades were put up Friday to keep people away from high waters.

The other side of town is practically unrecognizable as baseball diamonds have been turned into rivers.

Storm drains have been playing catch up all day after being pummeled with rain. Bridges that were covered with water Friday morning have since gone down.

"Well the water was up to the bridge, and I wasn't about to go across it because I don't swim-there's no way," said Brown.

Those who live along the creek say the most frustrating part has been how fast the water is building up.

Salisbury says the water in her daughter's basement is finally going down, compared to this morning when it was knee high.

"People with shop-vacs can't keep up trying to get the water out of their basements," said Salisbury. "I was very fortunate and I want to say thank you to the Sumner fire department. I stopped there and said "What does it take to get sandbags?" I was told a big smile, which I definitely did. And they followed me, within five minutes they brought a bunch of sandbags up to my daughters house. A minute or so ago I only had about two inches of water in there, so it's getting there...please mother nature leave the rain alone."
