SingleSpeed Waterloo brewery earns environmental honors

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The new SingleSpeed Brewery in Waterloo earns high honors from the Iowa Green Brewery Certification (IGBC).  The new downtown location received Platinum Level Certification.

The IGBC was developed by the Iowa Waste Reduction Center at the University of Northern Iowa in 2016.  Its goal is to raise environmental awareness to the growing brewing industry.

“Working with the IWRC was a joy as well as a blessing for us. The timing could not have been more perfect. When they approached us with their Green Brewery Certification program, we were already waist deep in the process of preparing our plan to maximize energy efficiencies while minimizing waste. As development at the Waterloo facility was focused on obtaining LEED Certification, many of the principles outlined by the IWRC were already guiding our project, however, the insight their team provided allowed us to increase energy efficiencies in a few areas as well as formulate an improved plan for landfill diversion for solid waste,” says Dave Morgan, founder of SingleSpeed Brewing.

“What Dave Morgan has done with SingleSpeed is astonishing. He and his team have gone above and beyond in their quest for sustainability. From the complete reclamation of the old Wonder Bread factory to composting all of their food waste to even installing solar panels on the roof, SingleSpeed Brewing Company is in a league of their own in Iowa. We tip our hats to the entire SingleSpeed team,” says Joe Bolick, project manager of the Iowa Green Brewery Certification.

Platinum level is the highest certification a brewery can earn from the IGBC.
