FORT DODGE (KWWL) -

A seventh inning surge doomed Waterloo Columbus as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont scored six in the frame to top the Sailors 7-2 in the opening round of the class 2A state softball tournament.

Columbus pitcher Kayla Sproul held the Rockets at bay for six innings, allowing just one run on a triple and an error early in the game. But Haegen Boyer's bases loaded double in the seventh opened the floodgates.

The Sailors tried to rally in the ninth as Sproul grounded out to second, but managed to drive in the Sailors' first run. Maliyah little singled to right to plate another, but it was all Columbus could manage on Monday.

The Sailors move to the consolation bracket where they'll face Central Springs on Wednesday morning.
