State Patrol: One person dead in West Union crash involving police officer

UPDATE: The Iowa State Patrol says 83-year-old Willys Fritz, of West Union, died in a crash involving a police squad car.

Troopers say 23-year-old Bryson Hennigar was driving his police cruiser in emergency status when the crash happened.

Authorities say Fritz was driving a pickup truck out of the Quillin's Grocery Store parking lot when he failed to yield, hitting the police cruiser near the intersection of Highway 150 and US 18.

Fritz died from his injuries. Hennigar was injured, but was treated and released.

Authorities say both drivers were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Several state troopers are on the scene of a deadly crash in West Union. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash involved a West Union Police squad car and a pickup truck.

It happened around 3:00 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Highway 150 and US 18. The officer was not the person killed in the crash.  

A witness says the driver of the truck turned in front of the officer and collided with the squad car. The officer was taken to the hospital, according to a woman on scene.
