Last minute preparations in New Hampton for RAGBRAI

Posted: Updated:

The countdown is on, five days until cyclists hop on their bikes for RAGBRAI.

The big ride kicks off in Orange City on July 23rd, with cyclists making a stop in New Hampton on Thursday.

Phil Zwanziger of New Hampton says, "Once they see New Hampton and what we have to offer, hopefully we can make a positive impression on a lot of people."

Tens of thousands of riders are expected to make a stop on Main Street, which is exciting news for business owners like  Karen Amundson.

"We are very excited. We always love to have out-of-town visitors and on this magnitude, it is just exhilarating," she says.

The town has been preparing for months, even collecting bikes to display on Main Street.

"For the past 3 months, we have been collecting about 400 bikes that we are doing a project with," says Julie Winter-Havel.

They are putting the bikes outside of businesses and making an archway to welcome cyclists into town.

"What it really showcases is the strength and heart of New Hampton," says Zwanziger.

All while cyclists get to explore a great town.

Zwanziger says, "Hopefully, they'll come back and who knows...maybe something bigger and better can happen too."

The theme in town is red, white and blue.

Main Street will be blocked off for cars until 3 p.m. on Thursday.
