Dubuque Mayor to seek another term

Posted: Updated:

Dubuque Mayor, Roy Buol, will seek re-election  to a 4th term.

Buol was first elected Mayor in 2005.

The retired John Deere employee and former Dubuque City Council member, was re-elected Mayor in 2009 and 2013.

Here is the press release his re-election campaign sent out this week.

Mayor Buol formally announced his candidacy to continue to serve the citizens and city of Dubuque as Mayor today. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Dubuque and I would welcome the opportunity to continue our collective focus on ensuring a safer, more welcoming, culturally vibrant, environmentally secure, and economically viable future for the long term,” Buol said.

“Mayor Buol’s experienced leadership during this important time is undeniable,” Doug Stillings, Buol4Dubuque’s Campaign Co-Chair, said. “The City’s fiscal health is strong.  Budgets are balanced. Our debt capacity is at approximately 70%, moving toward 24% over the next nine years, and importantly, funds are being set aside annually to position the City to respond, if needed, to unforeseen events.”

Mayor Buol underscored the importance of public safety in our community’s growth and success, saying “We continue to focus on public safety measures, adding significant staffing, equipment and technology improvements for local Police and Fire Departments. We anticipate the completion of the SW Arterial by 2019, which will provide congestion relief and improved safety with hundreds of trucks removed from our main streets daily. And with the planned economic revitalization of the Central Avenue Corridor, we will create a citizen-friendly environment and enhancement to our downtown neighborhoods.

While many cities across the country are struggling with severe infrastructure problems, Dubuque has made investments to insure our citizens have clean water, and through the Bee Branch Flood Mitigation Project, secure the safety and livelihood of the 50% of our citizens who live or work in that area.”

“Mayor Buol’s vision continues to strengthen our city and better prepare us for the future,” said Laura Roussell, Buol4Dubuque’s Campaign Co-Chair. “When you look at the positive impact of environmentally sustainable practices, along with the educational efforts of over 60 organizations creating a more welcoming and equitable life for citizens, and the significant return on investment in the cultural arts, all of which Mayor Buol has championed, we are moving toward a healthy quality of life that, in turn, will help us respond to a looming workforce shortage.”

“I am proud of the community we are becoming, and at the same time acknowledge that we have more work to do.  We need to stay focused on purpose, on a mission with vision.  I am grateful for the support I have received, and if re-elected, I would be honored to serve a fourth term as Dubuque’s mayor,” Buol said.
