University Heights Police looking for driver in car chase

University Heights Police are looking for the driver in a car chase. The chase happened around midnight, after Officer Simcox tried to pull over a 2015 Chevy Spark in the 1200 block of Melrose that was speeding.

According to police, when the officer walked toward the car, it sped off. The chase exceeded speeds of 70 mph.

 At the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Mormon Trek Boulevard, the Chevy lost control, jumped the curb, and landed off the roadway in a wetland area.

Three people in the vehicle were detained and questioned.

A K9 track was used by officers from the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety to find the driver, who they think ran away.

The driver has not been located. One passenger was arrested on a warrant and the other subjects were released.

UHPD was assisted by officers from the Iowa City Police Department, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Members of the Iowa City Fire Department and the Johnson County Ambulance Service were also on scene.

The incident remains under investigation
