Iowa DOT placing traffic counters throughout eastern Iowa

Posted: Updated:

You might've noticed an extra bump in the road lately.

Black, rubber tubes.

KWWL talked to the DOT about them. They say these are traffic counters.

Every year, they focus on a different part of the state.

This year, the DOT is placing them in northeast Iowa.

We asked the DOT what they hope to learn from counting cars.

They say it has a lot to do with safety measures.

"Do we maybe need traffic lights some place because of the volumes. Do we need turning lanes because there's a lot of traffic coming at this place that's making left turns. Or do we need to add a stoplight," Field Services Coordinator Pete Hjelmstad says.

The DOT says you don't need to slow down when you drive over them. Next year the rubber tubes will count traffic in southeast Iowa.
