Fire department uses creativity to increase volunteer numbers

Posted: Updated:

The North Liberty Fire Department recently created a recruitment video in hopes of getting more applications for volunteer fire fighters.

The video features what life is like inside the fire house for volunteers while using some humor.

"It's a good mix sort of the humility we like to have here and the idea of getting work done as a team," Interim Fire Chief, Bill Schmooke, said.

The department currently has 39 volunteers on its roster but Schmooke said they hope to add up to 15 recruits this fall and that the idea behind the video was to get people's attention.

That's because the need for volunteers is higher than ever for a growing town like North Liberty.

"We were running not even quite 500 calls for service a year and we've doubled that in my 11 years here. We're on pace to run about 1,200 calls this year," Schmooke said.

Filling that void isn't an easy task and that's not just the story in North Liberty, either.

"The volunteer fire service from coast to coast has difficulty getting and maintaining volunteers especially with just the level of sacrifice, with the number of calls that are increasing, and the training required to do this. It does take a special type of individual to commit at this level," Schmooke said.

The fire department will also be hiring its first full-time fire chief.
