VAN HORNE (KWWL) -

Charles City put together a fine defensive performance as the 14th ranked Comets topped number one Benton Community 2-1 to advance to the class 4A state softball tournament.

Sami Heyer struck out nine, including the final batter of the game to pick up the complete game win. Benton Community's lone run came on a squeeze play in the fourth inning when Charles City led 2-0. The Comets two runs came a frame earlier when Peyton Reams scored on a wild pitch, a bad throw on the same play allowed Tayler Schmidt to come to the plate.

Charles City, the seventh seed, opens the state tournament on Tuesday against second seeded Fairfield.
