UPDATE: East high athlete victim in stabbing

Posted: Updated:

Waterloo Police say 16-year-old Tyrese Nickelson was stabbed last Friday afternoon. Nickelson is known as a standout Varsity Basketball player at East High School in Waterloo.

Police say they're investigating the stabbing, which happened last Friday afternoon around 1:30 at 115 Webster Street.

Tyrese Nickelson had multiple stabbing wounds to his back and a large cut under his left arm. Nickelson was transported to Allen Hospital and then Iowa City Hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

KWWL spoke with Nickelson's mother Vanassa White in Iowa City while Nickelson was recovering.

"He still really can't believe that he got stabbed I think," said White. "And he told me he could've died. And I think that's the worst part right there 'Mom, I could've died.' No mother wants to hear their child say that."

White says she's unsure of what exactly unfolded during the game of basketball that turned terrifying. However, she says she knows her son to be a good kid.

"I'm not saying he's perfect, but I ain't ever know for him to be in a fight," said White.

Nickelson, who's headed into his junior year at East High is known to both his coaches and friends as a stand out basketball player, with good character both on and off the court.

White wants answers.

"I don't know the kids, but some of the kids came up and just asked did he want a fight?" said White. "And I heard he tried to walk away, this is what I heard I don't know. And a boy tripped him and they started fighting. I want some answers, I got to get some answers."

No arrests have been made at this time. The case remains under investigation.
