CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A dog was rescued from the Cedar River after jumping into the water and getting caught in the current.

The German Shepherd was rescued Wednesday after employees at Unique Events spotted the dog walking down 2nd Avenue SW in the middle of the street.

Travis Newell, an employee at Unique Events, tried calling the dog and followed it after it started running.

The dog walked approximately 12 city blocks, weaving in and out of traffic at times, and then made it's way across 1st Avenue and down to the Cedar River, where it jumped in the water.

Newell, as well as employees at Peterson Contractors Inc. or PCI, noticed the dog getting caught in the current.

The PCI workers working on the 1st Avenue Bridge had a boat, and started circling the dog in the boat until they were able to rescue it.

"A great feeling of after 12 you know I think a calculated like 12 city blocks worth of like jogging after this dog to finally see it in a boat and it was just, in one of the pictures you can see it's just completely pooped and worn out," says Newell.

After being rescued, the dog was turned over to Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control who returned it to it's owner.
