Firework fireballs stun and confuse crowds

Posted: Updated:

Following the finale of the Coralville fireworks show, three giant fireballs went off one after another leading many to believe something terrible had happened.

The Coralville Fire Department ensures that wasn't the case and everything had gone according to plan.

Robert R. Cargill was at the show with his family Tuesday night and was impressed with the display.

"It was a spectacular show. So many colors, so many shapes. The choreography of the fireworks. It was beautiful. It was a fascinating, wonderful show," Cargill said.

He thought the show was over and started packing up their belongings when giant fireballs went off one after another. The third he was able to capture on his phone thinking something catastrophic happened.

"You wait. That's all you can do. Everybody was silent. A thousand people silent instantly. This was a pretty odd, awkward silence and then you don't hear the sirens, you don't hear people screaming, you don't see people running so we assumed that everyone was safe,"  he said.

Coralville Police Chief Shane Kron said none of the public was at risk and that the fireballs were apart of the show.

"If their goal was to awe the crowd, they certainly did so," Cargill said.
