26-year-old Andrew Meeks was killed Sunday after being shot in a Walmart parking lot.
The shooting happened at the location near Edgewood Road in SW Cedar Rapids.
His family tells KWWL they want justice but they are not ready to make any sort of statement at this time.
The family also confirms this isn't the first time they've been dealing with loss lately, Meeks lost his 1 month old son in November.
Officers were on scene for hours Sunday night trying to piece together what led to the shooting.
Police arrived around 8 p.m. to find Meeks and one other man with a gunshot wound, that man is still recovering.
A car on scene appeared to have crashed into a guard rail behind Walmart, police have not said what led to that. KWWL spoke with people who live nearby, they say the incident happened much to close to home and they aren't sure whether they'd be able to tell the difference in hearing gunshots or fireworks at this time.
No arrest have been made in the incident but police don't believe there is any threat to the public.
Meeks died just days before his 27th birthday. Police expect the other man who was shot to survive, they have not released his name.
Meeks did jail time in the past for assault, violating a no contact order, trespassing and possessing a controlled substance.
