A mother and her one-month-old daughter are in the hospital tonight after a firework accident at a family gathering.

Emergency crews received a report of two people injured by fireworks in the 1400 block of Curtis Bridge Rd. NE in Johnson County after 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 1.

The victims were identified as 36-year-old Margaret Limkemann and her one-month-old daughter Aria. Mother and baby were injured after a firework launched sideways instead of upward, the projectile struck Margaret and exploded after impact.

Margaret was holding Aria at the time, and attempted to remove the child from her lap before the explosion. Family says Margaret tossed the baby off her lap and onto a blanket next to her. Both mom and baby were transported to the University of Iowa Hospital.

The victims were attending a party hosted by Richard Fowler, the owner of the property.  Fowler was subsequently cited for Failure to Have a Firework Permit in violation of Johnson County ordinance 4:1.4.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Jefferson/Monroe Fire (Swisher), Area Ambulance service out of Cedar Rapids, and University of Iowa Aircare.
