CourtKings top Minnesota, win MBL West Division Title

Posted: Updated:

The Cedar Valley CourtKings topped the Minnesota Rangers 107-98 in the Midwest Basketball League West Division final. The victory propelled the undefeated CourtKings in to the league championship game for the second straight season.

"It's just unbelievable feeling for my guys because they put in so much hard work,"first year head coach Michael Mohlis said after the win, "They've sacrificed so much for the team. There's no 'I.' It's all about winning."

After Cedar Valley led for most of the contest, Minnesota stormed back in to an 82-81 lead early in the fourth quarter on a traditional three-point play from Latrell Love. The CourtKings, however, stormed back in the final minutes and put it away behind a pair of former UNI Panthers. Anthony James knocked home a mid-range jumper, and Eric Coleman drilled a three on the following possession for a 15 point lead with 40 seconds remaining.

James, who played on last year's MBL championship team, said he's thrilled for the chance to do it again.

"It's different because we've got a different group of guys, and we're undefeated this year," said James, "So, we're playing for something different. Hopefully we continue that next weekend and win down in Texas."

Cedar Valley will face the Fort Wayne Vision for the title on the campus of Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas. The title game will be played on July 8.
