Police: Fireworks can cause distracted driving

Posted: Updated:

Fireworks were popping up all across the skyline last night distracting some drivers on the roads. Police say Fourth of July celebrations can cause some congestion and it's just one thing drivers need to look out for.

"Anywhere there is a firework display you're going to have a lot of people crossing so you just have to be aware that," said Samuel Shafer, Cedar Falls Police. "If you're the driver there are probably going to be people darting across the street so you have to pay attention to that and obviously if you are a pedestrian try to do it at a cross walk."

Police say fireworks can be a distraction and it is important to be on high alert when driving through areas with a lot of cars and people.

"Anytime traffic can get congested in areas we will see increase in accidents," said Shafer. "When it comes to congestion it's best for drivers to drive more defensively and brake well in advance where their turn is going to be."

Not only are people traveling on the highways, but also by foot and bicycle, police want you to look out for them too.

"We just try and provide a presence on the roadway," said Shafer. "With people being able to see the cop cars out there they are just gonna take a chance to slow down or to make sure they are wearing their seat belts or put the phones down and just drive accordingly."

Police are asking for drivers to keep their eyes on the roads and off their phones and the fireworks. A few towns held their firework celebrations last night. We checked in with Guttenburg and Waterloo to see how many tickets were given when it comes to accidents or firework, but have not heard back.
