High water leads officials to warn paddlers, boaters in Iowa

Posted: Updated:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Recent heavy rains have the Iowa Department of Natural Resources warning paddlers and boaters on Iowa's rivers to use caution this weekend.
The department also says the approaching July Fourth holiday usually sees thousands of paddlers hitting Iowa's waters.
Todd Robertson with the DNR's water trails program says swifter currents and increased traffic could pose a danger.
Those on the water also should watch for debris in the water. Some log jams have already been reported, such as one at the Anderson Access on the Skunk River just below Story City.
Current stream flows are available from the U.S. Geological Survey at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ia/nwis/rt .
