JONES COUNTY (KWWL) -

Severe storms ripped through parts of Jones County Wednesday night, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

John McConnell says he lost a barn, two sheds and numerous trees in the storm.

His farm is about ten miles west of Monticello, and about four miles from Prairieburg, where the National Weather Service says a tornado touched down Wednesday.

McConnell says he believes it was a tornado that caused extensive damage to his property and the house across the road.

He says the worst of the storm hit their property in the blink of an eye.

"I was in here with the wife, and the kids were in the basement, and we were watching to see where it was at, and it was calm. And all of the sudden the wind picked up, and stuff started hitting the house, and we went downstairs in the basement. And it wasn't two minutes, maybe a minute, and it was done and gone," he said.

Not far down the road, the same storm took down a hog barn, killing some of the pigs inside, its owner says.

But it could've been much worse, he said, as he had just moved most of the hogs out of the barn yesterday.
