Cedar River near downtown Cedar Falls during flooding in September 2016
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -
Cedar Falls Mayor Jim Brown says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have approved a permit which will allow the city to begin building a downtown flood levee.
Brown says the next step is to contract the project by the end of the year, leading into construction on the levee at that point or by early next year. Brown also says Cedar Falls leaders have worked alongside the state of Iowa and several private companies for roughly five years to make the levee a possibility for the city.
Brown says the Cedar Falls City Council gave approval to swap funds with Dubuque in order to attain more flood mitigation dollars for the project, ahead of a statewide deadline of July 1.
