Recycling rates at Iowa City landfill to increase

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Starting on July 1, people will see an increase in prices to recycle at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center. 

Minimum waste fees will increase to $6.50 for people of Iowa City and other Johnson County residents will see an increase to $7.

Below are some of the new rates for electronics:

  • $3 for small items such as printers, stereos, VCRs and DVD players
  • $12 for televisions or computer monitors smaller than 18 inches (measured diagonally from one corner to the opposite diagonal corner). This fee includes computer components.
  • $17 for televisions or computer monitors 18 inches or larger (measured diagonally from one corner to the opposite diagonal corner and all console televisions). This fee includes computer components.Tire recycling fees will increase to $0.15 per pound with a $3 minimum charge.

Also beginning on July 1, a secured load policy will go into effect to reduce the amount of litter along Melrose Ave., IWV Road, Hebl Ave., and at the landfill site. This requires all loads, that are being transported to the landfill, to be covered and secured so that it can't escape the vehicle.
