UPDATE: 9-year-old boy hit while riding bike

UPDATE: A young boy is recovering after being hit by a car while riding his bike.

The accident happened in the 2100 block of Byron Avenue in Waterloo, Tuesday afternoon.

Family and neighbors finding the 9-year-old boy, Keaton, laying in the middle of the road.

"The child screaming and yelling," recalls neighbor Sandy Mclendon.

His bike upturned, the front tire crushed, and a shoe left behind as the boy was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The Keaton's family says he has a broken leg and arm.

"He is just a bright bubbly kid. He is a nice kid and this should not have happened to him," said Mclendon.

Keaton was crossing the dead-end road from his grandparents home to the family workshop when he was hit.

From the driveway the 9-year-old was pulling out of, he would have had somewhat of a blind spot because of a truck parked on the side of the road.

The view of the man driving the van would have also been impaired by the parked truck.

With school out for summer, the family and neighbors are asking everyone in every neighborhood to slow down.

"Don't think it can't happen because it can. Your whole life can change in a split second if you aren't careful," said Mclendon.

The driver was cited for failure to maintain control of his van.

Keaton was supposed to pitch for his baseball team Tuesday night. The family says he is very disappointed not to be playing.
