WEST UNION (KWWL) -

A right of passage turned into a selfless act.

A boy in West Union decides to turn his Eagle Scout project into a way to help his neighbor battling cancer.

Incoming 9th grader Kale Rodgers says he's been working on his service project for about a year now.

A neighbor in town named Marian Harford has a leaky roof she hasn't been able to repair because she's been battling cancer.

She has lung cancer that's spread to her liver.

"You know I looked at my husband and said is this the part of our marriage vows that say for better or for worse, sickness and health, till death do us part," Harford said. "He said we love you Marian, and we want you here."

Marian and her husband's house was damaged from all the rain last year.

The roof repairs have been weighing on Harford's mind.

"I threatened my husband, saying if we don't get this done, I'm going to haunt him," she joked.

That's where Kale comes in.

This past weekend, he, along with family and friends, pitched in to finally replace Harford's roof.

Around 25 to 30 people came out.

Harford says she's thankful to Kale and everyone in the community for everything they have done.

"Sometimes we focus so much on the bad, and we forget to focus on how good people are," Harford said.
