Manchester United coaches lead soccer camp in Cedar Rapids

Posted: Updated:

Coaches from Manchester United are in Cedar Rapids this week running a youth soccer camp.

The camp is being held at Tuma Soccer Complex.

Kids ages 8-12 will have camp from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. each day while players 13-18 will meet from 1- 4 p.m.

In addition to the youth camp, the coaches are holding training sessions for those 18 & older each night from 5-6 p.m.

The week will wrap up with a coaches clinic Saturday morning from 9- 11 a.m.

The coaches clinic is free and area soccer coaches from any level youth through college are invited.

It's the first time coaches from Manchester United have come to Cedar Rapids to run camps.

Danny Byrne is one of the coaches with Manchester United Academy and he once played for Manchester United.
"To spend a week with kids where we can have a laugh, we get to know a little bit about them, we give them loads  of information about what we do and it's just an enjoyable environment we try to create," he says.

10-year-old Alex Lewis says he was surprised to hear the coaches would be holding a camp in Cedar Rapids.

"My mom said it was a once in a lifetime opportunity," he says.

Byrne says the ultimate goal is for the kids to have fun with the game of soccer.
"Soccer in youth development phase isn't so much maybe about winning. It's about the kids enjoying it, having fun and developing as individuals not as teams and so that's the idea that we want to sort of bring, we want to give the kids that mentality," he told us.

"We are learning just how to have fun like nutmeg and people, like kicking it through their legs and trying to get around people and learning moves," says Lewis.

The Cedar Rapids Rampage professional indoor soccer team helped organize the week-long visit.

In addition to Cedar Rapids, the coaches will be heading to Chicago and Milwaukee.

The past couple of years Manchester United coaches have gone to Chicago but this year they decided to branch out to other nearby cities.
