Cedar Falls Food Co-op looking for new members

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

More than just a "grocery store."

Cedar Falls is hoping to bring a food co-op to the Cedar Valley.

The Co-op would be focused on locally-grown, healthy, organic food.

That means food would come from places in the area, such as Hasen's Dairy or Sidecar Coffee.

As of now, the plan is for it to open somewhere in or near downtown Cedar Falls.

The Cedar Falls Food Co-op board says the location and community support can really affect the co-op's success in the long run.

Recently, a co-op in Dubuque and a co-op in Waterloo closed. The Cedar Falls co-op says they are planning on running things a little differently and modeling their store after other successful co-ops, such as Pioneer Foods in Iowa City.

The Cedar Falls co-op hopes to have around 1,000 people in the community sign-up to be member-owners by the time it opens.

They hope to have 600 members by the end of June. Right now, the co-op has around 585 members.
