Update: Garage fire damages home

Update: A garage fire in Cedar Falls destroyed the structure and spread to the adjacent home before crews were able to put it out Monday afternoon.

The home in the 400 block of W. 2nd Street sustained significant smoke and water damage.

The homeowner was home at the time of the fire. When police arrived on scene he was attempting to put out the fire.

"I was pumping the garden house through the back window of the garage when they got here. They said, 'No, don't do that.' . . . Garden hoses don't put out much water. My neighbor next door was rounding up his hose," said homeowner Gary Chambers.

Chambers says he had turned on his air compressor in the garage not long before the fire started.

"I was going to do some work on my fence out in my garden so I needed my air compressor for a stapler. I turned it on, it usually pumps itself up and shuts off.  So I just didn't pay any attention to it," said Chambers.

A little while later while on the phone with his daughter, Chambers said, "I think I need to go, I smell smoke."

Chambers says when he saw the fire was in the garage, he was worried the fire might cause an explosion.

"There was a car in there, there was a five-gallon can of gasoline, there was a snow blower, a riding lawnmower; stuff that could have exploded," said Chambers.

The Cedar Falls Fire Department was on scene for several hours and plans to check the home periodically over the night for hot spots.

Fire crews responded to a fire in the 400 block of W. 2nd Street in Cedar Falls this afternoon.

The homeowner tried to put the fire out, but by the time crews arrived, the garage was fully engulfed and the fire was moving into the kitchen.

Crews say the fire started in the garage, but it's not clear what started it at this point. No one was injured.

Crews will be on scene for a couple hours, looking for hot spots throughout the home.
