Two employees treated for smoke inhalation after Washington fire

Posted: Updated:

A small fire at a renewable energy company leaves two employees injured.

It happened early Saturday morning at the Iowa Renewable Energy facility in Washington. A piece of equipment caught fire.

Three employees were inside the building at the time of the fire. Firefighters arrived within minutes, and were able to contain the fire before it could spread.

No chemicals were released.

The company says two employees were treated for minor smoke inhalation, but no one was seriously injured.

"We will work proactively with officials to determine the cause," said Ron Lutovsky, the plant’s chief operating officer and chief financial officer. "The safety of our employees is our number one priority."

Iowa Renewable Energy has 28 employees. The plant is equipped to make 36 million gallons of biodiesel per year from fats and vegetables like soybean oil and recycled restaurant grease.
