NEW DETAILS: Daughters say they witnessed father being shot on Christmas

Posted: Updated:

Two young girls say they watched their father get shot.

"The guy looked right at her and proceeded to shoot her dad in front of her," said Kala Kading, the victim's ex-wife.

Elyssa and Allison Kading say their dad, Donny Kading, and his girlfriend started arguing about a past relationship.

"It was arranged for Donny and this new guy to meet up and talk man to man," said Kala.

The couple was allegedly meeting Steele Unkrich.

The girls say they were on their way to their dad's house when they stopped at Schallau Motor Company in Van Horne. The Benton County Sheriff's Office confirms the shooting happened in a parking lot at the dealership. It was in that parking lot where the two girls say they watched their dad get shot.

"My dad got out of the car and opened his door and then my dad got shot," said Allison Kading, 8-years-old.

Kala, Donny's ex wife says Unkrich shot Donny under the arm.

"It broke four ribs and it's like an inch and half away from his heart," said Kala.

That inch and a half saved Donny's life.

"I couldn't imagine having to tell them their dad died," said Kala. "Or if they would actually have to see their own dad being killed in front of them."

It was a heart-wrenching Christmas Day for the eight and ten year old, their mother says she is thankful they are okay.

"I am proud and thankful that they didn't get hurt," said Kala, "I mean you see on TV all the time bullets going completely through and it could have gone really bad and I am glad that it didn't."

Monday night Kala says her ex husband is moving around. She says doctors are keeping the bullet inside his chest because of how close it is to his heart.

The girls said after their father was shot, Unkrich said he had to go and took off. Police later found him on Highway 30 in Tama County.
