Group raising money to help buy new canine unit for Dubuque Police

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A group of local business and medical professionals are working to raise $100,000 to buy a new dog, the training needed and a specially modified vehicle for the Dubuque Police.

They're led by Jeffrey Mozena, president and CEO of Premier Bank.

“Several of us got together to discuss what we might do to support the local men and women in uniform as they keep our community safe. We were looking to do something to show our appreciation for a well-trained and supported group of peace officers," he said.

Dubuque Police Chief Mark Dalsing the best way they could help would be to raise money to field an additional canine unit.

The department currently has just two.

"So we're kinda limited. A department of 100 officers and 60,000 people, one multi-purpose canine and one bomb detection canine...we spread them pretty thin," said Lt. Scott Baxter with the Dubuque Police.

Baxter says an additional canine would be a huge relief to the current handlers and their dogs.

"There's only one canine handler and one dog in terms of what we typically use them for, which is narcotics detection. We'd have twice the coverage. We wouldn't be relying on one person and one dog essentially all the time," he said.

Baxter said the entire department is thrilled to have so much support from the community.

"That's a huge sum of money and it means a great deal to us here. Not only the potential that it means maybe getting another canine unit, but just the support in general that we have the backing of these individuals and businesses in our community, especially at a time when law enforcement isn't looked at favorably by some people," he said.

The group has raised about $70,000 so far, and are hoping to raise the rest of the money in short order.

If you'd like to donate, you can send a donation straight to the city of Dubuque, or you can donate at any of the three Dubuque Premier Bank locations.
