CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

UPDATE: Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett says he is considering running for a higher office.

Mayor Corbett never out right said he is planning on running for governor, but he did say it's something he is thinking about and that he believes he has something to offer the state.

"Today I'm announcing though I'm not going to seek re-election for mayor in 2017," Corbett announced in a morning press conference.

Corbett was first elected mayor in 2009 and he says he never planned on being mayor forever, admitting he is considering a run for higher office.

"A lot of people are going to speculate and this will add to the speculation that I'm looking for higher office like a run for governor and I am looking at those things," Corbett told KWWL.

In the meantime, he says choosing not to run for mayor is a first step in his future and his belief in term limits.

"Your heart tells you one thing, your head tells you another, but I really feel at peace with my decision of not being mayor in 2017  and giving other people a chance to be mayor," Corbett says.

City Council member Kris Gulick announced through a press release about 4 minutes into Corbett's speech this morning, that he intends to run for mayor.

Gulick tells us he didn't want to run against Corbett.

"Difficult to run against somebody that you agree with most of the things that they're involved with and focused on," Gulick says.

Corbett says he plans to stay out of the upcoming mayoral race.

"I don't plan on endorsing any of the candidates," he tells us.

Corbett did not give any direct answers about his future and possible run for governor.

"Those decisions won't come until next year," he says.

Corbett did announce that he will have a "big surprise" at the end of his final state of the city address in February.
