AP: GOP electors cite rural voice in Electoral College

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Some Republican members of the Electoral College say they're defending rural and small-town America as they resist pressure to vote for Hillary Clinton instead of President-elect Donald Trump.

The Electoral College convenes Monday in the 50 state capitals and the District of Columbia.

A vocal movement has pressured Republican electors to abandon Trump even though he won 30 states, giving him the electoral voters needed to be president.

Most base their plea on the fact that Clinton won some 2.6 million more popular votes.

The system gives more weight to less populated states. But Trump still won plenty of populous states, too, including seven of the largest 10.
