Tow truck driver offers advice for wintry weather

Posted: Updated:
DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

It's just another day on the job for Ambrose Roling, a tow truck driver.

He's towing car after car Friday in Dubuque.

KWWL's Shirley Descorbeth rode along with him for a while as he explained ways drivers can avoid issues during wintry weather. "Check your tires, look at them, make sure they're not bald. Most people that end up in the ditch have bald tires," he said.

A tire with little or no air is a problem on the road.

It's one of the top reasons tow trucks are called from McCann's Service. "Corrosion, Iowa salt, weather," said Roling.

Another issue is drivers maintaining their cars. "Maintenance, maintain your car. Oil changes help out a lot." he said.

Some extra tips from experts -- check you tire pressure, check your battery, keep up with oil changes, and keep your gas tank filled.

They advice if it's a severe snow storm, just stay off the roads, but if you must head out, drive slow.

Roling says his number one advice is for people is stay off your cell phone while behind the wheel because it's just too much of a distraction
