MARION (KWWL) -

An emotional event, the swearing in of new Marion Police Chief Joseph McHale, Thursday afternoon.

A large group turned out for the brief swearing in ceremony of McHale, who joins the police department from the Kansas City Police Department.

McHale was emotional in address to the group, saying he and his wife fell in love with the town long before his job search began.

"Me and my bride fell in love with what Marion is, what it stands for, how you invest in your community and in your schools and we knew immediately that that's where we wanted to raise our son," McHale said.

He said he's both proud and honored to join the department.

"I give you my solemn oath to do what's best for the community," he said. "Not what's best for Joe McHale."
