New Dubuque roundabout project kicks into higher gear with $500K grant

Posted: Updated:

Plans for another roundabout project in Dubuque are being given a boost -- to the tune of $500,000 in state funding.

According to our coverage partners at the Telegraph Herald, the Iowa Department of Transportation awarded the City of Dubuque the money through a grant for a roundabout project at North Grandview and University avenues. City Council approval and additional funding will still be needed, but work on the new roundabout could start in the summer of 2018. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $965,000. The intersection was also in the spotlight back in September, when City Council members rejected bids to put in a traffic signal in order to explore the possibility of a roundabout being built there.

The intersection is just one block from the city's first roundabout, at the intersection of North Grandview and Delhi and Grace streets. Construction on that intersection was completed this year and has been open since August. Dubuque police say only two crashes have been reported at the new roundabout. Both were reportedly minor in nature with no injuries, and with drivers failing to yield to traffic in the roundabout in both cases.
