Boy dies after getting buried by snow

(Greenwich, NY)  A 12-year-old upstate New York boy has died after he and his friend, 12, were trapped in a snowbank Tuesday.

The boys were playing in a snowbank in Greenwich around 5 p.m. while a Department of Public Works truck was plowing, according to the police.

After the boys were reported missing, a K-9 officer found the sled they had been using, and crews began digging through the snow.

“There was probably a dozen and a half men with shovels and bare hands digging, and I think they moved with no exaggeration seven tons of hard packed snow in about 10 minutes time,” police chief George Bell said.

One boy was found unresponsive and died at the hospital in Greenwich.

The other boy was found conscious. He was taken to the hospital and is responsive and talking.

Police say it’s unclear if the boys became trapped after the snow fort they were making collapsed or if the snow plow buried them in the snow.

The child who was found conscious told police he heard what sounded like machinery and then it went dark.

The incident remains under investigation.
