IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Shelter House in Iowa City opened it's emergency winter shelter this week as piercing cold is hitting the area.

The shelter opened Monday night inside Zion Lutheran Church.

Originally the shelter was planned to open at the old Unitarian church but some issues with heat and water delayed the opening.

Zion Lutheran Church stepped up so the shelter could still open on time.

"It's pretty basic it's very utilitarian, we have some cots on the floor and some blankets and some coffee and really the mission of it is is that we want to get people off the streets and we want to get people out of the cold weather so that people aren't dying on our streets and being out in those dangerous conditions," says Mark Sertterh, Shelter House Associate Executive Director.

The shelter is open from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m.

Wednesday night the shelter will open at 8 p.m.

Eventually the plan is to move the shelter back to it's originally planned location.
