People advised to stay off Coralville Lake because of unstable ice

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is warning people to stay off Coralville Lake as winter sets in and ice begins to form.

Despite ice starting to appear on the lake with December's freezing temperatures, the Corps warns that most of the ice is not strong enough to support activity on the ice. The Corps also says they are lowering the lake level to it's typical winter elevation, which creates unstable and dangerous conditions when combined with ice slowly forming. Specifically, a slope along the shoreline could make it hard to get off of the ice along the lake.

According to the Corps, the worst case scenario is air pockets forming during this time of transition for the lake. More information can be found on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website and Facebook page.
