12-year-old shot in north Des Moines

Posted: Updated:

"It keeps happening week after week," said Mason Ginn.  The sound of north Des Moines gun fire remained fresh in minds of Jessica Dawson and Mason Ginn.  Jessica said, "I heard gun shots, probably five." A drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon at 3122 5th Street just steps from their home together.  "Obviously they sounded like the were right behind us.," said Jessica.

The two were spared but a twelve-year old girl across the street was not.  Jessica said, "To see her carried out of her house on a stretcher it's just really scary and really, I can`t imagine being in their position right now."  It`s a position that's growing familiar after the same home was shot at several times two weeks ago.  Mason said, " It's just terrible here in a nice, calm neighborhood.  Why do you have to do that?"

The sudden uptick in gun violence has left many in the neighborhood shaken "What if they would have had the guns turned the other way? Then it would have been our house," said Jessica.

They hope investigators can quickly catch the suspects giving their community a bad name before it's too late.  Jessica said, " I have a feeling that if they don't find them it's just going to keep happening and what's going to happen next time?"

The 12 year old victim is expected to recover. Police have not given a description of any suspects at this time but because many homeowners on the street have security cameras they believe they were driving a white Ford Taurus looking vehicle.
