Accidental shooting death numbers disputed

Posted: Updated:

Federal government figures indicate 77 minors died as a result of accidental shootings in 2015.

However, that number is significantly lower than the incidents of accidental shooting deaths involving minors, as researched by two media organizations, reports Ryan Foley of the Associated Press.

An analysis of all gun violence cases in the U.S. over a recent 2 1/2 -year span by The Associated Press and USA TODAY Network showed nearly twice that many children and teens were killed in such incidents last year.

The annual mortality figures were released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which previously acknowledged that its own figures likely represented an incomplete tally of the problem.
