Preparing for winter weather

(KWWL) -

When the snow starts to fall, it can quickly pile up.

Having the right supplies before it starts can make a big difference, including ice melt, shovels, and maintenance on snow blowers

"Making sure that ice melt is down prior to snow fall is really the best way to do it. Just like when the city preps streets before snow fall," said O'Donnell Ace Hardware Store Manager John Hand.

Once the falls and the kids get out to play,  temps will still be frigid. Covenant Pediatrician Dr. Davidson says to watch for signs of frost bite which include skin that is tender, red, and/or extremely cold to the touch.

"I still recommend children play safe under the supervision of a guardian or parent. Again, watch for the local frost advisories. If there is a wind chill advisory that recommends children stay inside, I would take heed," said Dr. Davidson.

The key to winter weather no matter who you are is being prepared, whether that is putting down salt before the snow hits or wearing the appropriate clothing.

When it comes to driving, a good dose of patients is needed especially as plows do their job.

"We are out there trying to make the roads as safe as possible. I know [drivers] get frustrated. They get behind us in traffic. I know we are slowing them down, but trust me, we are trying to make it better," said Iowa DOT Garage Operations Assistant Kip Siems.
