Miami is now Zika-free

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) - Florida's governor has lifted the final "Zika Zone" in Miami.

The announcement Friday morning came nearly four months after the first local transmissions were reported in Florida.

It is still possible mosquitoes could be carrying the virus, so health officials urge residents and visitors to continue using repellent and get rid of standing water.

This is especially true for pregnant women, as Zika is known to cause birth defects.

But as of Friday,  Florida no longer has any identified areas of active transmission.

185 local mosquito-borne cases of Zika have been reported in Florida, along with 38 cases believed to be the result of sexual transmission.
