DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Thousands of very passionate and enthusiastic Iowans crowded the Iowa Event Center in Des Moines Thursday night to hear from the future President of the United States.

President-Elect Donald Trump made his first appearance in the state since the election as part of his "USA Thank You Tour."

During his speech Trump spoke at length about Governor Branstad, saying in part, "And knows how to deliver results and he will deliver results. Just like he has been delivering results for 23 years to the great farmers and people of Iowa."

He then went on to announce Branstad, "Your governor and I can truly say your great governor, Terry Branstad," Trump announced.

Branstad took the stage to a cheering crowd and spoke only briefly, saying in part, "I am very proud to serve America in this very important role."

Iowans showed their pride during the event. A sign in the crowd thanking Trump for picking Branstad.

"I think it is quite an honor for a governor from Iowa to have such close ties to such a powerful country as China, so I wish him the best. I am excited to see what [Lt. Governor] Kim Reynolds will do," said Kathy Billman from Fort Madison, Iowa.

For many in the crowd, seeing Trump visit the state as President-Elect was a moment they weren't sure they would ever see.

"It is pretty surreal. I didn't think it would happen," said Joe Wood from Kansas City.

"Oh! It is such an honor to be here. I am 85-years-old and I will tell you, I haven't had this feeling since the end of WWII. This is a mammoth victory that prayer brought," said Marilyn Roberts from Griswold, Iowa

Vice President-Elect Mike Pence also spoke at the event. He focused on the goals the Trump administration will have, including demolishing Obamacare and lowering middle-class taxes.
