Cedar Rapids Pearl Harbor survivor shares his story

Posted: Updated:

While many vets who witnessed the attack are no longer with us, one 94-year-old Cedar Rapids man invited KWWL into his home, sharing stories from that day.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a terrifying moment in history.

A moment Cedar Rapids veteran Francis Riley survived.

Stepping into his home, you'll find pictures, metals, and albums taking us back in Time.

Francis has a picture of the USS Arizona and the USS Vestal hanging above his couch.

"I remember that day just like it was yesterday," he said.

Francis was a signalman, and he was 19 years old at the time of the attack.

Francis remembers standing on a bridge between the USS Vestal and Arizona when the attack happened. He saw a Japanese pilot flying above him.

"He was up in the air just like that, and he waved at me. And then he went about his business, and I went about my business," Francis said.

A bomb landed feet away from Francis. Luckily it didn't go off.

Francis says he did not stop fighting for his country after that day. In fact, he traveled the world, fighting for many more years.
